A Hudson Valley athletic trainer and Marist graduate saved a freshman student’s life.

A Mount St. Michael student fell to the floor during a freshman basketball game at Stepinac Friday afternoon.

Stepinac’s athletic trainer, Maxwell Anderson, rushed to the court and immediately knew something was wrong. The student’s eyes closed, and he wasn’t breathing, Kevin Devaney Jr. wrote on his blog.

“He became unresponsive,” Anderson told Devaney Jr. “He started breathing. And then he stopped again. I began to give him rescue breaths.”

Spectators watched in stunned silence as Anderson, a 2016 Marist college graduate, gave the boy CPR.

Soon, the freshman began to breathe on his own.

“My legs were shaking afterwards,” Anderson said. “When you’re in the moment, you only concerned is to get him breathing again.”
