Today it’s cool to carb load! Besides being election day, today is National Sandwich Day! You might not have known, but November 3rd is in fact National Sandwich Day. FYI, yesterday was National Deviled Egg Day and National Traffic Directors Day

To celebrate today’s special occasion a few places are offering sandwich deals: Subway is giving away a free six-inch sub with the purchase of a six-inch sandwich and a 30-ounce drink.  Note: the 30 ounce drink costs close to $2 and contains over 100 grams of sugar.  Meanwhile, Arby's classic roast beef sandwich will cost just a buck today.  (Feel's like an Arby's night)

As legend has it the sandwich dates back to the 18th century when an English noble developed a way to eat with one hand during a 24-hour gambling event.

In these curious times, defining a sandwich can be difficult. Earlier this year there was a great debate on whether a hot dog was a sandwich!

Last year The Atlantic defined a sandwich as a horizontal, portable structure, containing more than just a condiment and having two exterior pieces of bread or bread-like product. In their study The Atlantic classified a burger as a sandwich, but said a hot dog was not.

Believe it or not, New York taxes burritos as sandwiches. Massachusetts rightfully does not. The Empire State also taxes hot dogs as sandwiches. Corny Joke Alert: One could say it’s easy to “make it here” as a sandwich.

You also might be wondering, what is the most popular sandwich in America. Last year Datassential, a market research firm, wondered that very question. In their survey, they learned that turkey was the most popular sandwich, followed by ham and chicken.

Whatever your fancy, enjoy your favorite sandwich and/or some great sandwich deals on this glorious National Sandwich Day!
