329 Hudson Valley Bridges Deemed Poor/Structurally Deficient

A new report examined the conditions of all the bridges in the Hudson Valley region.

Tripnet.org recently published a report that detailed the condition and funding needs of the bridges in the Hudson Valley. Bridges were rated on a scale of 0-9, 0 being failed, 9 being excellent. 329 of the bridges in the Hudson Valley area, or 13% of bridges in Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, and Westchester Counties, were rated as poor/structurally deficient. The 13% of bridges that were deemed poor/structurally deficient carry roughly 2.6 million vehicles daily.

According to the report, the bridges that are deemed poor/structurally deficient may be posted for lower weights or closed. 64% of Hudson Valley bridges were rated in fair condition, meaning that the structural elements are sound but there has been minor deterioration on the bridge's deck, substructure, or superstructure. The remainder of Hudson Valley bridges, 23%, were rated in good condition. For comparison, 10% of bridges in New York State were rated poor/structurally deficient. 53% statewide were rated in fair condition and 37% in good condition.
