A woman is charged with DWI after she was allegedly driving in the wrong direction on the New York State Thruway early Wednesday morning.

It's terrifying to think that anyone driving on the Thruway this morning could have been met head-on by a driver traveling in the wrong direction. According to New City Patch Gina Alegria was charged with DWI after police say she was reported driving north in the southbound lanes of I-87 at 2:30am today. Authorities say she was traveling between Sloatsburg and Newburgh when she was quickly discovered by police and pulled over before there was an accident.

After a sobriety test, police say Alegria had a blood alcohol level of 0.17 percent. The 28-year-old was charged with reckless driving and DWI. Luckily the police were able to spring into action before anyone was hurt. This story could have had a much more tragic ending.

Alegria is scheduled to appear in Town of Woodbury court next Wednesday.
