One World Trade Center's observation deck opens today. Aside from the spectacular view of the New York City skyline it also offers one of the coolest elevator rides in the world.

During the 47 seconds it takes to reach the 102nd floor of One World Trade Center, visitors will be treated to an incredible time-lapse view of Manhattan. Nine 75-inch, HD screens are arranged behind "windows" in each elevator that creates the illusion of being in a glass case outside the building.

The ride starts 515 years ago, when Manhattan was nothing more than a grass field. As the years tick by, passengers can see buildings rise and the skyline take shape. The old World Trade Center buildings also appear, and disappear after the events of 9/11 as a sobering reminder of what took pace before the creation of the new tower.

Check out the video below to see exactly what the ride is like:

As for the trip back down, it gets even cooler. During the descent from the observation deck, the elevator seemingly flies out of the side of the building, giving riders the illusion of floating around the tower. This Willy Wonka type experience has been described as "amazing" by those who've ridden it.

If you're planning a trip to One World Trade Center and don't want the experience to be spoiled, resist the temptation of watching the video below.
