Twenty-seven cats in one home. That's what the Ulster County Society of Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found when they served a warrant to a Woodstock house.

The conditions in the Glasco Turnpike dwelling were "deplorable," Ulster County SPCA Executive Director Adam Saunders told the Daily Freeman. Now the cats' owner will have to answer for their treatment in court.

Michael Vasa, 61, has been charged with 27 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance, all misdemeanors.

The home was filled with so much debris that once of the Ulster County SPCA investigators broke a finger and suffered bruises and a sprain when he fell through a floor in the home, according to the Daily Freeman.

The cats suffered upper respiratory infections, conjunctivitis and skin issues, but the Ulster County SPCA hopes to rehabilitate them and get them ready for adoption, the report stated.
