Woman Saved From Jumping off Bridge Into the Hudson River
Two quick thinking Hudson Valley residents saved a despondent woman from jumping into the Hudson River yesterday.
The Daily Voice reports that the woman left her vehicle and jumped a barrier on the Tappan Zee Bridge on Monday afternoon around 2:30. A good Samaritan noticed the woman and raced to her rescue, joining her on the ledge.
The real-life Clarence the angel from "It's a Wonderful Life" held on to the woman until another passerby was able to contact New York State Police for assistance. The woman, who was shouting threats about jumping into the Hudson River, has not been identified.
Because of the quick thinking of the two good Samaritans, the woman was not injured and was taken to Westchester Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation. The whole incident only lasted about 10 minutes, with bridge traffic only being stopped for a short time.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge is equipped with emergency call boxes to help prevent incidents of suicide from the span.
