Taking a left hand turn on red just feels wrong. But there is at least one place in the Hudson Valley where it's completely legal.

Perhaps you've been driving in the area of the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie headed towards the arterial. You come to a light and all of a sudden the car in front of you just took a left on red. This one particular intersection has been known to mildly freak out people not from the area. But are they breaking the law or is it legit?

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles states that a left hand turn on red is legal when turning from a one way street onto another one way street. It turns out more than 30 states have similar laws on the books, but our neighbors in Connecticut do not. So don't try it in the Nutmeg State.

So, when you make that left hand turn from Columbus Street onto Route 44/55, you can do so with confidence that yes, you're not going to get a ticket (for this particular incident).

Are there any other one way streets in the Hudson Valley that you can think of where a left hand turn is legal? That's the only one we could think of.
