In a quest to prove how stupid superstitions actually are we challenged our producer to a superstition obstacle course.

On Friday the 13th we decided to see if there was any truth to many of the superstitions and rituals people follow. From opening umbrellas inside to walking under a ladder, we wanted to find out if they really were as unlucky as many believe they are.

In the name of science, we challenged our producer, Meat Sandwich, to a superstition obstacle course. We set up 10 superstitions for him to break in just one minute.

Of course, we had to pick the unluckiest day of all, Friday the 13th, to conduct the challenge and we started it off by wishing Meat Sandwich "good luck" for his performance. A listener called to let us know that saying "good luck" is actually bad luck in the theater, that's why it's common to tell actors to "break a leg" instead.

The rest of the superstitions broken by Meat Sandwich are listed below:

  • Never put shoes on a table
  • Don't knock over a salt shaker without throwing salt over your shoulder.
  • Don't let a broom sweep over your own feet
  • Never open an umbrella inside
  • Finding a penny with the tails side up is bad luck
  • Don't ever let a black cat cross your path
  • Don't step on the cracks
  • Never walk under a ladder
  • If you break a mirror you'll get seven years bad luck.

Did we finally wind up debunking these superstitions? Well, last we checked Meat Sandwich was doing just fine. But you might have to check back in seven years to find how that whole broker mirror thing worked out.
