A Walden man was found to be in possession of heroin, crack cocaine, a stolen handgun, and marijuana, according to authorities. State Police say he also tried hide cocaine by swallowing it.

State Police in Middletown pulled over 34-year-old Walter Herring of Walden for a traffic infraction on State Route 211 East in the Town of Wallkill. Police allege that Herring was found to be in possession of 50 bags of heroin, crack cocaine, and a small amount of marijuana.

According to State Police, during the traffic stop, Herring swallowed a bag of cocaine in an attempt to hide it from troopers. He was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center for possible cocaine poisoning.

Following his arrest, troopers and Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search warrant on Herring’s residence, a mobile home in the Town of Montgomery. A loaded 9mm handgun, more cocaine and marijuana, as well as, over $11,500 was found in the mobile home. The handgun had been reported stolen to Middletown Police 2014.

Herring was charged with tampering with physical evidence, 5th-degree and 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a weapon, possession of stolen property,
and unlawful possession of marihuana.

He was arraigned at the medical center by Town of Wallkill Justice Joseph Owen, and committed to the custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office without bail.
