In almost every heartbreaking story that involves someone dying from an overdose, it is mentioned that it all began by finding prescription pills in the medicine cabinet. No one ever thinks that it will escalate to more and more abuse of those pills or possibly moving on to other opiates, that will eventually lead to their death.

As a result of the rise of prescription drug abuse, The Ulster County Sheriff's office announced a Prescription Medication Drop-Off Program which gave people a place to dispose of any unused prescription medications. According to Sheriff Paul J. Van Blarcum, this program collected approximately 335 pounds of prescription medication in 2015.

The program is still in effect for residents to take advantage of. The Sheriff's Office provides four locations where medications can be dropped off: the Law Enforcement Center on Albert St. in the City of Kingston is available seven days a week 24 hours a day; the Esopus Substation located in the Esopus Town Hall; the Wallkill Substation located on RT-208 in Wallkill; the Wawarsing Substation located on Shoprite Boulevard in Wawarsing; and the substation at UCCC. The substation Drop-Off boxes are available for public drop-off by appointment only, but you can make a drop-off if a deputy is present at the substation.
