Ulster County Man Charged With Shooting Up Home, Hitting Local Gas Station

A man who legally can’t own a firearm is accused of firing 13 shots from inside his home and hitting a nearby gas station.

Around 6:30 a.m. Friday, Saugerties police responded to shots fired near the Citgo Mart on Mount Airy Road in the Town of Saugerties.

According to the initial caller, someone was shooting and the Citgo Mart was hit by shrapnel.

Police soon received another call reporting a burglary at a home on Route 32, across from the Citgo Mart.

The home owner, 32-year-old Tyrell J. Schleede told responding officers that he began shooting out the windows of his home at a group of people who attempted to break in.

An investigation conducted by police, in addition to a search of the area by officers, resulted in no evidence in support of Schleede's claims, police say.

Police allege that shortly after Schleede’s girlfriend and three-year-old child left the home, Schleede loaded a .20 gauge shot gun and began shooting inside his home.

A total of 13 rounds were fired through the front living room window, bedroom windows, kitchen window and the front door of the residence, police say. At least one shot hit the Citgo Mart.

Schleede was charged with criminal mischief, a felony and a misdemeanors for criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, discharging a firearm over a public highway and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence.

Schleede was arraigned in the Town of Saugerties Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in Lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

Schleede has a past felony conviction and by law cannot possess any type of firearm, police say. It’s unclear why he began shooting.

Saugerties Police were assisted in the investigation by members of the New York State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Environmental Conservation Police.
