Two local forests have been labeled by Audubon New York as important bird areas or IBA. The Black Rock and Schunnemunk forests have been given the designation and will become part of a larger existing area.

The Times Herald Record reports the deal will help protect threatened species living in the area, including several that are on the organizations watch list to protect:

  • Cerulean Warbler
  • Wood Thrush
  • Prairie Warblers

The forests themselves are healthy, but the designation is needed to help protect these birds.

Black Rock Forest is a privately owned 3,800 piece of property in Cornwall while Schunnemunk is recognized as a state park in New Windsor. The forest is approximately 2,800 acres and consists of 8 marked trails for around 20 miles of hiking.

Audubon New York is the state’s leading voice for the conservation and protection of natural resources for birds. Integrating science, conservation, policy and education, Audubon’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity.
