Truck Driver Crashes Into Truck After Falling Asleep on I-87, Spills Fuel

A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel on the New York State Thruway in the Hudson Valley and crashed into another truck, causing a fuel spill.

On May 14, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officers responded to a tractor trailer accident and fuel spill on I-87 South, just past the Harriman Exit in Woodbury.

State Troopers at the scene advised the ECOs that a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, hit another truck, crossed into the right lane, skimmed a concrete barrier, hit a thruway sign, and narrowly missed colliding with a large boulder before coming to rest in the bushes off the road.

The driver was not seriously injured, officials say. However, a fuel tank ripped off during the crash and was leaking diesel fuel onto the ground.

Only a small amount of diesel fuel spilled and was isolated near the truck. No fuel entered a nearby wetland, officials say.

No environmental violations were found, although traffic violations are pending with State Police.
