The Metal Box is a weekly web series posted each Friday where we discuss all things hard rock and heavy metal: news, videos, interviews, live concerts and more.

This week we talk with guitarist Joe Satriani ahead of the release of his new album and the G3 Tour 2018. We covered a variety of topics with Joe Satriani including his new album What Happens Next featuring Chad Smith and Glenn Hughes due out Jan. 12. We also talked about the G3 Tour 2018 with Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, and Phil Collen which plays the Palace Feb. 10. Plus we discussed his time in Deep Purple, status of Chickenfoot, and what kind of students Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai were. Check out the full interview above.

The G3 tour was organized by Joe Satriani in 1995 and features him along two other guitarists. The tour has played most years and has featured an impressive roster of talent include Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, and many others. I've gotten to see Satriani a couple of times over the years and he's amazing. I'm really excited about the return of the G3 tour in 2018 and the lineup.
