Happy Birthday today to Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. He's 49. Other rockers celebrating include Black Star Riders/Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham (65), and both singer Janet Gardner and drummer Roxy Petrucci  of Vixen are 54. In remembrance today, Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship co-founder Paul Kantner would have been 75.

Billy Corgan is the lead singer, guitarist , and sole original member of Smashing Pumpkins. The band formed out of Chicago, Illinois in 1987 and had major success throughout the 1990's right up until their breakup in 2000. The band's second album Siamese Dream was a huge success. Released in 1993, it sold 4 million copies in the U.S. and cracked the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart. Singles included "Cherub Rock", "Today", and "Disarm". They followed that up with 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness featuring the band's biggest hit "1979". Corgan reactivated Smashing Pumpkins with a new lineup in 1997.
