A local brewing family isn't afraid to stray from the norm when it comes to creating unique beers. Borrowing from several different styles, this beer has a style all its own.

Brandin and Nicki from North River Hops and Brewing, along with their daughter, Mason, stopped by to let us sample their newest creation. Belgian India Red Ale was created when Nicki noticed that there were some extra bags of Belgian malt lying around the brewery. She asked Brandin if he'd consider using them to brew a new version of their already popular Red IPA. Brandon did, swapping in a Belgian yeast to create an entirely new style of beer.

The result is the Belgian India Red Ale. The sweet aroma in this beer gives way to a wall of malt flavor. Caramel and bread notes from the Belgian malt, fruity bitterness from the American hops and a little spice and floral aroma from the Belgian yeast all work together to create a complex, but easy-drinking beer. Surprisingly refreshing for a beer with so much going on, it clocks in at just over 6% abv.
