A number of vehicles are banned from driving in the Hudson Valley today as high winds and lots of snow is in the forecast.

Starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, the New York State Department of Transportation is banning all tractor trailers as well as short and long tandem trailers on the following roadways until further notice:

  • I-87 in both directions between Exit 1 (NYC Line) and Exit 17 (I-84)
  • I-84 in both directions between Pennslyvania and Connecticut I-684 in both directions between the Hutchinson River Parkway and I-84
  • I-287 (Cross Westchester Expressway) in both directions between Exit 1 and Exit 12
  • I-95 (New England Thruway) in both directions from the NYC Line to the Connecticut Line

The NYDOT also announced a ban is in place for the following vehicles on Interstate-84 in both directions between Port Jervis and the Pennsylvania State Line.

    • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
    • Tractors hauling double trailers
    • Tractors hauling empty trailers
    • Trailers pulled by passenger vehicles and pickup trucks,
    • Motorcycles
    • Recreational vehicles (RVs)

The ban on I-84 at the Pennslyvania border also applies to all commercial vehicles

The Pennslyvania Department of Transportation defines a commercial vehicle as:

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, of 17,001 pounds or more, whichever is greater.
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation.
  • Is a school bus.
  • Is transporting hazardous materials which is required to be placarded in accordance with Department regulations
