If you're headed out to the local frozen yogurt shops this week you'll want to avoid paying way too much money for these toppings.

Frozen yogurt is big business in the Hudson Valley. There seem to be new do-it-yourself shops popping up every month. Most recently, SweetFrog Frozen Yogurt has come to the Hudson Valley, taking over three Hoopla locations.

While getting to create your own frozen yogurt masterpiece is fun, it can also quickly add up. After swirling just the right flavor combination in your cup, the endless toppings bar could be your downfall. Since your dessert is priced by weight, you'll want to avoid some deceptively heavy toppings that can really drive up the price.

Delish visited a 16 Handles location and carefully weighed all of the toppings to show just how much money you could be throwing away. Here are some of the heaviest toppings they found just aren't worth the money:

  • Blueberries
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Cheesecake bites
  • Strawberries
  • Gummy Bears
  • Brownie bites

Sadly, the healthiest toppings seem to be the least cost effective. Those heavy berries wind up really boosting your final cost. And while gummy bears sound like a good idea, they're way too heavy and always harden up after getting too cold anyway. But there is some good news. A few of our favorite, delicious toppings add very little weight to your frozen yogurt. You might want to load up on these the next time you visit:

  • Cereals like Cap 'N Crunch or Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  • Mini peanut butter cups
  • Crushed Oreos
  • Sprinkles
  • Whipped cream
  • Mini M&Ms and Reese's Pieces

We want to know what your favorite frozen yogurt toppings are. Describe your own perfect flavor combination on our Facebook page or in the comments section below.
