One of the most tense and drawn out debates in the region has been over the future of the Indian Point Power Plant in Buchanan. The plant produces over 2,000 megawatts of electrical power providing as much as 30% of the electricity in NYC and surrounding areas, however, it has long been a target for both environmental and safety concerns. Parent company, Entergy Nuclear Northeast is currently seeking a twenty year license renewal  by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and others, have called for the plant to be shut down. Proponents point to the positive economic impact the plant provides for the state, and that Indian Point has taken huge measure to improve their past safety issues..
