Before the "Mommm, I'm booooored" comments surface, we have a great suggestion for entertaining both the kids and parents this summer: the Orange County Fair Speedway.

The oldest continuously operating dirt track in the United States recently got some upgrades, including new grandstand seating and a new track. In addition, Orange Motorsport Entertaining, of Nanuet, recently agreed to run the speedway complex at 239 Wisner Avenue in Middletown for at least five years, according to Hudson Valley Post.

Here are 5 things you'd want to know while planning your visit:

1) They'll celebrate 100 years of auto racing there in 2019. But the speedway's history runs deeper, according to its website:

The track was built in 1857 for horse racing at the Orange County Fair and staged its first automobile race on August 16, 1919. The speedway is located at 239 Wisner Avenue in Middletown on land which was known as The Ogden Tract in the mid-1850s. It was originally a half-mile horse racing track known as the Harry Clay Oval, named after a race horse that was famous at that time. Over the years, the track was widened and lengthened to a true 5/8-mile race track.

2) Most of the action happens on Saturday nights, with a few specials added to the schedule on other nights. From April through October, races are hosted each Saturday night except Labor Day weekend, with grandstand and drive-in gates typically opening at 5 p.m. and everything typically ending at 11 p.m. The races usually start at 6:30 p.m.

3) You have a variety of seating options. Traditional bleachers start in the first turn, covered seats with full seat-backs are behind the starter's stand and the front stretch after turn 4 has half-covered grandstands, according to the speedway's website. They also have a drive-in area where you can tune into the play-by-play on your radio and watch from the comfort of your own car. Handicapped seating also is available.

4) The demolition derby is coming July 15. The participant rules obviously are a little different for this, but that doesn't mean the competition is any less fierce.

5) Monster trucks will perform July 20 and 21. Everything will be super-sized.
