After a quiet and pleasant weather day yesterday, the clouds are building today and bringing with them a round of strong thunderstorms to the Hudson Valley this afternoon into this evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for Ulster and Dutchess County until 5 pm today. A line of strong thunderstorms are moving through this area with wind gusts up to 40 mph and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. With these winds, there could be minor damage to trees and possibly scattered power outages.

These storms may intensify and if they do, we will bring you the latest information from the National Weather Service.

Since lightning  can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm, if you find yourself in the path of this storm, please seek shelter inside, preferably in a room on the lowest floor. If you see severe weather developing in your area, please take cover and be safe before you report your conditions to the National Weather Service.
