A new law was signed this week that makes it harder for those telemarketers to trick Hudson Valley residents.

Anyone who still has a landline knows the frustration of getting constant telemarketing phone calls. They've even begun targeting local cellphone users, bombarding unsuspected victims with annoying pitches or scams to steal their money.

Recently those telemarketers have gotten even more sneaky by hiding their identity with fake caller ID data. That practice has gained the attention of Albany lawmakers and is the reason for new legislation just signed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo this week.

The plan is aimed at protecting New Yorkers from deceptive telemarketing practices by requiring telemarketers to use correct caller identification information. The only problem is that there's little hope of the law actually being enforced.

New Yorkers already have the ability to join the National Do Not Call Registry, which is supposed to protect consumers from receiving deceptive calls in the first place. Because most of the perpetrators are from overseas, however, there is little risk of being prosecuted. So it seems likely that those same scam artists won't be deterred by this new caller ID law either.

We want to know how you handle unwanted telemarketer calls. Do you just hang up or complain to the caller? If you still have a landline, are all of these calls making you think about canceling your number? You can let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page or in the comments section below.
