Small Earthquake Hits the Tri-State Region

A small earthquake hit parts of the Tri-State region on Thursday night.

CBS New York reports that a 1.6 magnitude earthquake hit near the town of Butler in Morris County, New Jersey. The earthquake was shallow, only occurring about a mile deep.

Some residents said they heard a loud boom-like noise and could feel their homes shake. Some say they smelled burning afterwards.

Earthquakes are actually not that uncommon in the area, as that part of New Jersey lies right on top of the Ramapo Fault Line. The Ramapo Fault Line is one of the major fault lines in the United States.
