Many people are sexting and it turns out, it’s good for you. A new study shows that sexting can be part of a healthy, satisfying sex life, and it’s actually pretty common.

The research was presented at the American Psychological Association’s 123rd annual convention. More than 8 out of 10 people questioned, said they’ve sexted at least once in the past year. For the purpose of the study sexting was ruled as sending or receiving sexually explicit material via text.

Some 870 people ages 18 to 82 were surveyed. Eurek Alert reports 88 percent of those surveyed said they have sexted in the past, while 82 percent admitted to doing it during the past year.  75 percent of the sexters say they did it during a committed relationship and 43 percent claim they sexted as part of a causal relationship. Those we did sext consider their behavior as fun and carefree and had higher beliefs that sexting was expected in their relationships.

The study also showed greater levels of sexting linked with greater overall sexual satisfaction and greater relationship satisfaction. The researchers are hopeful, with more research, sexting could become a part of helping couples in therapy.
