The best meteor shower of 2015 is coming this weekend.

The Geminids will be best visible Sunday, December 13, and should be in full swing by around 9 p.m.  According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the Geminids originated from a comet named 3200 Phaethon. It's 1.4 year orbit takes within the orbit of Mercury and then out past Mars into the asteroid belt.

The meteors travel at 22 miles a second, which is only about half the speed of November’s Leonids or August’s Perseids so they should be easy to spot. The Geminids should provide about one to two meteors per minute.

Of course, you'll want to get away from city lights for the best viewing.

Hopefully, the weather will hold out over the Hudson Valley for Sunday. While the forecast calls for record warmth, skies are expected to be mostly cloudy for Sunday evening.
