Phone scammers have stepped up their game and are now targeting residents with a devious new scam.

If your phone rings and someone on the other line says that they are from the department of public works, they may be trying to rip you off. The Daily Freeman reports that residents throughout the region are getting calls asking for money for overdue water bills. Fearing that their utilities will be cut off, targets of the scam have been giving the caller their credit card number or sending them a money order to pay the bogus charges.

Village of Walden Police say that the scam has been happening in their area, but also believe that residents throughout our region are being targeted. They suggest that if you think you have a problem with your water bill to call the department of public works during regular business hours. There is no need to immediately send funds to anyone over the phone.

If you think you've been targeted by phone scammers, contact your local police department and let them know.
