The Times Herald Record reports that police helped talk a man down after he threatened to throw himself off an overpass.  The incident happened early Tuesday morning near the Route 302 overpass, in the town of Wallkill.

Police Chief Robert Hertman said in a news release that Officer Alan Levine found the 22 year-old man shortly before 4 a.m. A  family member had called police to report the man had left home after a fight and was reportedly intoxicated and suicidal.

Levine, along with Officer Jeremy Warner and under the direction of Sgt. Paul Besser, established a rapport with the man. While the officers engaged him in conversation, state police diverted traffic off Route 17. The entire interaction took about 30 minutes when the officers persuaded the man not to jump.

Town of Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps took the man to Orange Regional Medical Center for evaluation. Middletown police assisted town police.
