A powerful iPhone app helped track down and capture a woman who police say stole a handbag on Sunday.

The Times Herald Record reports that Fransuash De Lynn Vega of Saugerties was arrested and charged with stealing a woman's handbag that held an iPhone, purse and the alleged victim's keys.

The arrest would never have been made, however, if it wasn't for the Find my iPhone app. iPhone users have the ability to track down their phone wherever it is, and find its precise location on a map. That app is what led police to Vega and the iPhone that was reported stolen.

Police that were on the scene say that the iPhone was cracked open and the battery was removed in an attempt to turn off the tracking capabilities. That didn't work and the iPhone was still sending out its coordinates through GPS, allowing police to find the device.

Police say felony charges will be filed against De Lynn Vega later this week. She is currently being held at the Ulster County Jail.
