A man is accused of DWI and assault after he allegedly took a car and left a friend on the side of a Hudson Valley highway.

On Saturday, New York State Police charged 25-year-old Anthony Velazquez of Bronx with assault and reckless endangerment, felonies, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Around 4:20 a.m. Saturday, Troopers responded to a reported disable vehicle on Interstate 684 in the area of mile post marker 5.5. The victim told arriving officers that he was the designated driver. When one passenger felt sick, he pulled over on the highway and escorted her to the shoulder where she vomited.

When he walked her back to his vehicle, Velazquez is accused of entering the drivers’ seat and driving away. In an attempt to stop Velazquez from driving away, the victim grabbed the side of the car.

Velazquez continued to pull away and the victim fell to the ground which caused a non-life threatening head injury, police say. The victim was treated by North Castle EMS on the scene and refused further medical attention.

Velazquez was later found following a one-car crash on Old Hopewell Road in the Town of Wappinger. Authorities allege that Velazquez was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Velazquez was charged with DWI at the Wappinger barracks and transported to the Somers barracks to answer the other charges. He was arraigned in the North Castle Town Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail.

He is due to appear in both town courts at a later date and time.
