Police say a distressed Hudson Valley man attempted to take his life by jumping off of a 16-story building on Sunday morning.

Police received a 911 call on Sunday morning just before 9:30am saying a man was on the roof of the Rip Van Winkle apartments in the City of Poughkeepsie. Eyewitnesses said that the man was standing on the ledge.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and Fire Department responded to the call and found the man in question. After talking with the suspect, officers say he told them he intended to jump.  Officer Alvarez from the City of Poughkeepsie engaged the subject in conversation until crisis negotiators from the City of Poughkeepsie Emergency Service Unit arrived on the scene.

Just over an hour later officers were able to convince the man to come off of the ledge. The man was taken to Mid Hudson Regional Hospital for evaluation.
