A Hudson Valley man is accused of driving drunk into a pole, splitting the pole in half and flipping his car.

On Wednesday around 5 p.m., Saugerties police responded with the Centerville-Cedar Grove Fire Department and Diaz Ambulance for a report of an injury in a one-car accident.

An investigation revealed that 36-year-old William Maloney of Saugerties was driving a 2005 Acura south on Railroad Avenue in Saugerties when he left the road and hit a pole, police say.

The impact of the crash caused the pole to split in half. Maloney’s car flipped over and came to a rest on its side, trapping the 36-year-old in his car.

Mahoney, who was uninjured, was freed from his vehicle by fire personnel and evaluated at the scene by paramedics.

He was taken into custody and transported to Kingston Hospital where a blood test of his BAC determined Maloney was allegedly driving drunk.

Maloney was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was released to a sober third party and is due in court on March 29.

The sudden closure of a popular buffet, a local heading to the NBA and a wanted Hudson Valley sex offender tops this week in local news stories.
