A convicted felon who was spotted walking in the Hudson Valley with a rifle is accused of stealing that rifle and many more weapons.

On Monday around 8:30 a.m., the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Patrol received two calls regarding a suspicious pair of men with a rifle walking down State Route 17B near Hamilton Road in the Town of Thompson.

An officer patrolling the scene soon found a man with rifle near the intersection. The other man was soon spotted by police up Hamilton Road.

After a brief investigation it was determined that 25—year-old Joshua D. Forshay of Monticello broke into a home on Route 17B in the Town of Thompson and stole a rifle, a backpack containing ammunition, a knife, a BB pistol and money from the home, police say.

When Forshay left the home he met up with the other man and asked the man to carry the rifle. Police believe Forshay asked the other man to hold the rifle because Forshay is a convicted felon who can’t legally possess a firearm. Forshay also has an outstanding warrant out for his arrest.

The other unnamed man is not believed to involved in the burglary, officials say.

Forshay was charged with burglary, criminal possession of a weapon, grand larceny, criminal mischief, all felonies, and the misdemeanor of petit larceny.

He was arraigned before Town of Thompson and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.
