A 69-year-old Newburgh man is accused of shooting another man in the back.

On Saturday just before noon, police heard a single gunshot while patrolling the area of Van Ness Street and Lutheran Street. Officials noticed a number of people running away and a black car fleeing the area of Broadway and City Terrace.

Officers followed the fleeing car and soon stopped it on Mill Street near Ann Street. The sole occupant of the vehicle, 69-year-old James Beckwith of Newburgh, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.

A black Rossi .38 caliber revolver, the weapon allegedly used in the shooting, was found in Beckwith’s car, police say.

Around the same time as the arrest, a 39-year-old Newburgh man was found with a single gunshot wound to his back. He was taken to St Luke’s Hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries, officials say.
