A ban on plastic shopping bags is now in effect for New Paltz, but now it looks all of Dutchess County could be next.

The Daily Freeman reports that Legislator Joel Tyner has brought forth a proposal that would make single-use plastic bags illegal in all of Dutchess County. According to his propsal, Tyner says that the ban is necessary to reduce litter in the county.

April Farley, another Legislator, has gone on record supporting the ban. She believes that Dutchess County would be better of without the bags littering the streets. Specifically, she cited the Route 9 area near Wal-Mart as an example of places that have an abundance of bags littering the area.

Republican lawmaker, Joseph Incoronato, says that he agrees the bags are a nuisance and are not biodegradable, but believes the ban would be too much of a restriction for local businesses.

In April, the Village of New Paltz adopted their plastic shopping bag ban. Under the law, volators could be fined up to $150. There is no word what the penalty would be under the proposed Dutchess County ban.

We want to know what you think. Should Dutchess County institute a plastic shopping bag ban?
