Over 30 Hudson Valley senior citizens are homeless after an early morning fire ripped through their complex.

The blaze began around 4 a.m. Tuesday at the Hughson Commons Apartments on Gables Way in Carmel.

Part of the roof collapsed as firefighters fought the fire for about seven hours. Around 40 apartments were affected; many that were destroyed, others heavily damaged.

All of the residents did get out of the apartment building safely. Officials believe about 35 people are now homeless. Red Cross is helping with the displace senior citizens.

“All tenants placed with family or other housing thanks to the Red Cross,” Keith Hallock wrote on Facebook. “The town supervisor and emergency services of the Putnam County did a great job to provide a place and to help organize getting tenant’s valuables and meds in conjunction with local and state police.”

Two kittens who were thought to be killed in the fire were found alive in a sofa.

At least one police officer suffered minor injuries, ABC reports.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
