Police are investigating and hoping for any help after a teenager from Orange County was shot and killed near a popular hangout spot for high school students.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, City of Newburgh Police responded to an area near Fullerton Avenue and Third Street for reports of shots fired. Arriving officers quickly found a young man not moving on the ground from an apparent gunshot wound. The shooting occurred near a deli that has been a very popular establishment with students from Newburgh Free Academy.

Keyshan D. Gayle, 18, of New Windsor was transported to St. Lukes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Gayle suffered a single gunshot wound to his back.

The fatal shooting is currently being investigated by City of Newburgh Police, New York State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
