An Orange County man fought the law, the law won.

On Tuesday, Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation on East Main Street in the Town of Wallkill. During the stop deputies allegedly detected the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

During a search of the car, police say they found a small bag of weed and a small bag of narcotics. A passenger in the vehicle, 35-year-old Erik Duggan, of Middletown, is accused of grabbing the bags of drugs and fleeing police.

When authorities caught up with Duggan, at a nearby parking lot, Duggan allegedly started to fight with the officers.

Duggan was charged with assault and tampering, felonies, as well as resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of a governmental administration and unlawful possession of marijuana, misdemeanors.

Duggan was arraigned in Crawford Town Court and remanded to the Jail on $15,000 cash bail or a $45,000 bond alternative.

One of the deputies was treated and released at Orange Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained during the arrest.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a traffic ticket and released.

New York State Police and the Town of Wallkill Police assisted at the scene.
