An elderly Navy veteran and his wife have a safe space to call home thanks to Rebuilding Together Dutchess County and the nonprofit's team of dedicated volunteers.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County aims to provide a warm, safe and dry home for veterans, the elderly, the disabled or low-income families with children. To that end, the organization holds National Rebuilding Days in which volunteers come together to repair homes or make needed modifications.

During 2013's National Rebuilding Day, Rebuilding Together Dutchess County replaced the roof on the home a local Navy veteran shares with a wife. The volunteers also replaced the rotten lumber and framing, changed out broken light fixtures and windows, fixed the sagging ceiling in a bathroom, and installed grab bars and hand rails.

"It is an amazing project and we are very grateful to be chosen and to have these top notch people helping out," the homeowner said.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County wants to help other military personnel in need and is currently seeking nominations.
