On Dec. 18 at 12:35 AM, New York State Police stopped a vehicle on I-87 in the Town of New Paltz for a traffic violation and found illegal drugs.

The trooper's interview with the vehicle's driver gave probable cause to search the occupants of the automobile and the vehicle itself, the New York State Police said in a press release. The driver, 32-year-old Matthew Bauer, and the passenger, 29-year-old Kayla B. Goncalez, were both found to be in possession of crack cocaine and heroin, police said.

Both Bauer and Goncalez, Beacon residents, were taken into custody and charged with:

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 5th Degree, A Class D Felony (Bauer)
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree. (2 counts for Bauer and 3 counts for Goncalez).
  • Bauer was also charged with a violation of the NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law.

Both were arraigned in the Town of Plattekill Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail.  Bauer is being held on a $2500 cash bail or $5000 bond while Goncalez is in jail on a $1000 cash bail or a $2500 bond.

Both suspects are due in the Town of New Paltz Court on December 20th.
