A TV crew in Buffalo was doing a story on an underground electrical fire when a second explosion caught everyone off guard. The initial fire was reported late Sunday morning when witnesses said they saw smoke pouring out of manholes. WRGZ was on site, interviewing a witness, when a second explosion sent a manhole cover soaring straight up into the sky.

According to WUSA 9, National Grid cut off power to the immediate area around the fire. By about 2:30 p.m Sunday afternoon, local firefighters said the situation was under control.  A spokesman for the utility told the press the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Experts believe the explosions were caused by a build-up of heat, gas and smoke leading to intense pressure in the confined space under the road.
