According to the New York State Police Facebook page, a State Trooper was shot and killed Sunday night.

New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II has announced that New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis has died.

The tragic event took place on Sunday night in the town of Theresa in Jefferson County. Trooper Davis responded to a call of shots fired during a domestic dispute and while approaching the residence of the dispute Trooper Davis was shot once and killed.

The suspect is 32-year old Justin D. Walters, who is an active duty member of the Army stationed at Fort Drum. He surrendered to other State Troopers without incident.

The investigation has revealed that that Walters is also suspected of killing his wife in the incident as 27-year-old Nichole V. Walters was also found deceased at the scene.

Trooper Davis, of Evans Mills, NY, was 36 years old. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags lowered Monday in remembrance of Davis.

"Trooper Davis served as a member of the New York State Police for four years, and his death is yet another sad reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day in order to protect our communities and serve the residents of this great state," Cuomo said.
