Two New York police officers are under investigation after eyewitnesses say they senselessly murdered a groundhog.

According to WNYT the alleged animal cruelty took place during a police golf tournament on Friday at Frear Park Golf Course in Troy. Witnesses say that two police officers took off in a golf cart to chase a woodchuck. When the animal could no longer run away, they say officers purposely ran over it with the motorized cart.

The gruesome play-by-play of the incident was posted on Facebook and describes how the woodchuck attempted to crawl away before rolling over and dying. To make things worse, the eyewitness claims that a baby woodchuck was spotted nearby. The accuser goes on to speculate if it was searching for its mother who was just run over.

The head of the Troy City Council has banned the Rensselear Police Department from holding future events at the course while authorities conduct an investigation into the incident.

Sadly, it's too late for the groundhog. It makes one wish that the tournament was held at Bushwood Country Club, where you could be sure that the animal would have somehow figured out a way to get the last laugh.
