UPDATE:

The deadline has been pushed back to apply for a license to grow and sell medical marijuana, by the state Department of Health.

The new deadline for businesses seeking one of five licenses is now June 5. The previous deadline was May 29. The push back is due to the number of questions regarding the application process.

The state is expected to award five contracts to private marijuana growers, who will each be permitted to open up to four dispensaries and distribute the drug to patients in New York.

The state Department of Health opened the process a month ago, see story below.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The New York state Department of Health is currently accepting applications from groups who are interested in manufacturing and distributing medical marijuana.

The groups who are interested, will go through strict regulation and inspection from the state. The application cost is $10,000, which is nothing compared to the $200,000 manufacturers will have to pay to be registered, as reported by CBS 6.

The registration fee will be returned to those who do not receive a registration.

The deadline to apply is May 29.

Many advocates and families who have loved ones with medical issues that marijuana could help, say the process is moving very slowly.

The Department of Health issued a press release, and stated all the details of the application process.

The press release states:

The law provides for the initial registration of up to five organizations in New York State, which will grow, manufacture, distribute, and dispense marijuana for medical use. Each registered organization may operate up to four dispensing facilities statewide, for an initial total of up to 20 geographically-dispersed dispensing facilities
