New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez was charged by the federal government with conspiracy to commit bribery and wire fraud in a 14-count indictment, according to NJ.com.

Federal Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr said Menendez's friend and campaign donor, Dr. Salomon Melgen was also indicted. Both were indicted on one count of conspiracy, one count of violating the travel act, eight counts of bribery and three counts of honest services fraud, Carr said. Sen. Menendez was also charged with one count of making false statements. The indictment follows an investigation of the relationship between Menendez and Melgen.

Senator Menendez is scheduled to speak to the press tonight at the Newark Hilton at 7 p.m.
