City of Newburgh officials are seeking a federal grant of more than $432,000 to purchase the 'Shot Spotter' program, to put lid on gunfire on the streets.

The 'Shot Spotter' technology uses sensors that are placed all over the city that detect the sound of gunshots, and in real time, can identify the location. The city council voted on Monday evening to apply for the grant. They are hoping it can curb the almost nightly episodes of gunfire.

If this technology becomes available to Newburgh, they will have immediate reportage. Mount Vernon, NY uses this technology already. The 'Shot Spotter' has proven to show a decrease in gunfire within communities.
