The 2016 Major League Baseball hasn't even started and the New York Yankees already have received some bad news.

Yankees first baseman and top prospect Greg Bird will miss the entire 2016 season due to shoulder surgery. The Yankees announced that Bird suffered a recurrence of a shoulder injury that he initially sustained in May 2015.

Bird will undergo surgery Tuesday for what has been diagnosed as a torn labrum, according to the NY Post.

The Yankees figured Bird could serve as back up to the injury prone Mark Teixeira. In 2015, Bird batted .261 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.
