After sponsoring legislation banning pet tattoos and piercings, New York State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal is taking on her next animal rights challenge: a push to ban the declawing of cats in the state.

Rosenthal has put together a bill that would ban removing cats' claws unless necessary for medical reasons. The bill has not yet been introduced to the NY state Senate, but it has received backing from the Humane Society of New York.

In an interview with Gothamist, Rosenthal called the practice of declawing inhumane:

"There's no reason to do it unless the animal has infection that is never going away, or if there is a cancer or tumor-related issue in the claw. It's basically done because humans want it done, and I don't think it's our right to mutilate our animals for our own satisfaction."

Rosenthal's previous efforts include fighting to limit cosmetic testing on animals and pushing the bill that banned pet tattoos and piercings. The tattoo and piercing ban bill was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
