New York state could be taking a step in the right direction in regards to helping farmers within the state.

The NY Daily News reports that state lawmakers passed legislation that directs the state to create a list of  New York state-owned properties that could potentially be leased or sold to anyone who wants to get into farming.

The bill also requires the state of New York to create programs to advise those new to farming about taxes and farm financing.

Republican Senator Patty Ritchie of Oswegatchie, NY is one of the sponsors of the legislation. Ritchie says she is hoping the bill will encourage more people in New York to become farmers.
