Gerald Ruhland wasn't expecting to wake up to this. The 80 year-old Cheektowaga man and retired truck driver was awoken 2 a.m. Tuesday when he heard “a big bang.”

Buffalo News reports that Ruhland's home was full of smoke. The home's windows had also been shattered and the floor was buckled.

That's when Ruhland said he heard voices coming from his basement. After calling 911, Ruhland saw a giant hole in the side of his house.

So what was going on?

According to reports, a Dodge Avenger had crashed inside the basement.

Police say that Marcellus Hutcherson of Buffalo and Caesar J. Scott of Cheektowaga, were in the vehicle when it lost control and crashed into the basement.

Police have not said who was driving, but appears whoever was behind the wheel had lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then went over the sidewalk, and across the lawn of Ruhland’s neighbor’s house and straight into the side of Ruhland’s home.

Police are investigating if speed was a factor in the accident.

Cheektowaga Assistant Police Chief James Speyer said Scott suffered a serious spinal cord injury, and was taken to Erie County Medical Center.
